Why Farming Matters

What would you grow?

Refers to page 19 in the booklet

This activity gives the children the opportunity to play the role of a farmer and make decisions about what they would grow to feed the children in their school.

A visit to a farm will always help children to understand farming at scale.

To find a farm near you, visit Countryside Classroom. Farming & Countryside Education (FACE) can help you prepare for a farm  visit. Contact your Regional Education Co-ordinator.

Perhaps you could then arrange to visit some local allotments so that the pupils can compare the two. What are the differences? (Quantity of produce/crops grown; size of plots/fields – economies of scale; labour required; use of machinery; commercial or personal use of produce etc.)
