KS1 English activities that can be carried out before, during or after a school visit.
These activities can be adapted for use as a teacher-led or an independent activity.
Talk for Writing Activity Ideas
- Role play in a structured area - milking parlour with farmer, inspector/assistants, milk tank/lorry driver, etc. Introduce vocabulary of milking parlour.
- Teacher demonstrates how you can act out various scenarios - awkward cows which won't budge, milking time, cow falls ill, tanker arrives, etc.
- Children act out their own scenarios.
- Extend role-play, introduce the vet - incorporate into milking parlour set eg farmer, vet, assistants, sick cow.
- Farm Shop with assistants and customers. Items marked according to children's ability with money e.g. 1p, 2p items or 10p, 50p.
- White coat and gloves
- Box for medicines.
- Box marked refrigerator
- Display area
- Egg boxes
- Order pad and price lists
- Plastic food
- Arrange furniture or dividers in classroom into cubicles with cardboard cows (or children as cows)
- Farm pictures
- Tubing with clothes pegs to simulate milking machine
- Feed bowls and pretend cow cakes
- Name tags to make sure children know their roles
- Selection of picture alphabets to look at
- Farm picture - words on display around the room
- Phonics: alliteration as word game or book making. e.g. happy hens, proud peacock; farm phonics families: feet, feed, weed, sheep, steer, cheek.
- Vocabulary: using farm words, animal names, adults/babies, crops, buildings, vehicles
(these words should be available on display around classroom).
- Using some information books on farms - sort pile of books into fiction/non-fiction.
- Find me two facts about cows.
- How many books have index page/contents page/pictures?
- Find page with ???? on it.
- Make a poster about pigs which contains 6 facts.
- Variety of non-fiction or 'topic' books and websites about farming
Writing: Transciption and Composition
- Story Writing: write about a farm set in the 1940s; a problem on the farm; an animal escaping; or a trailer tipping over.
- Labelling: label a map or a life cycle with vocabulary learnt on the farm.
- Descriptive: describe scarecrow/night on farm. Diary: day in life of chosen farm animal or farmer.
- Speech bubbles: pictures of animals with speech bubbles, children complete bubbles.
- Letters: to farmer asking question/thanking them for visit; to the vet; to farming organisations asking for information; as an animal to a farmer.
- Poems: simple alliteration using adjective and name of animal; animal noise poems; list of animals to which children add adjectives; acrostic poems.
- Non Chronological report: about chosen animal, or building on the farm, or farm machinery.
- Book folded with two slits, small envelope with some rice/lentils inside, slot envelope into slits
- Pictures with speech bubbles
- Folded books, either zig-zag or origami
